Outdoor Winter Hazards For Cats

January 15 2022

Anyone have a kitty? Or maybe thinking of adopting one? If so, keeping her safe and sound indoors is something we highly recommend, especially in winter. Fluffy may have an adventurous spirit, but she’s also very vulnerable and small. Winter adds a few more hazards than things like cars and weather, which pose threats to outdoor cats all year long. A local vet lists a few of them in this article.

Darkness

We all know how it can get dark pretty early at this time of year. That can put your furry friend at increased risk from traffic or cars. Kitty’s ability to spot potential threats may also be harder.

Temperatures

Cold weather is dangerous for Fluffy, even with her natural fur coat. Plus, given that she’s so close to the ground, even a few inches of snow comes up to her tummy. Frostbite is much more common in cats than many people think. Kitties are most susceptible at the tips of their tails and ears, and sometimes on their paws and legs.

Increased Risk Of Getting Lost

Normally, kitties tend to stay within a certain distance from home. However, Fluffy may still venture out further than you would think. Ice and snow can mask scents and landmarks that help your feline companion get back home.

Chemicals

Many of the chemicals we use in winter are toxic to cats. Antifreeze, for example: it’s extremely poisonous to our feline pals. And many types have a taste that’s appealing to kitties. And while there are pet-friendly versions available, even if you use these, your neighbor may not.

Entrapment

Kitties love to explore nooks and crannies. If Fluffy takes shelter in a neighbor’s shed during a storm, she can get trapped inside.

Predators

For those who live in rural areas, there may be an increased risk from predators for your feline buddy … especially those looking down from above. The lack of foliage and white snow can make Fluffy an easy target from the sky.

Tips

If you do let your furry pal out, or if your kitty tries to dash out the door any time she has a chance, be sure to make an emergency shelter available to Fluffy. This can be a simple storage tote with a hole cut in one side.
