6 Ways to Keep Your Dog's Teeth Healthy

June 15 2021

Do you cringe when your dog gives you affectionate smooches? Have you noticed blood on your pup’s toys or bowls? If so, then there’s a good chance that your canine companion has some form of dental troubles. Dental care is just as important for dogs as it is for people. A Millstream, BC vet offers some tips on this below.

Brushing

You’ll need to get Fido on board with getting his teeth brushed, but the time spent training will be well worth it. At first, just rub your pup’s teeth and gums with your finger. Use a doggy toothbrush and toothpaste, and try to do one section of his mouth each day.

Watch For Warning Signs

Fido can’t tell you if he has a toothache, so it’s important to keep an eye out for signs. Bad breath, as mentioned above, is one of the main ones. Other red flags include stringy, ropy, thick, or excessive drool; visible tartar buildup; bleeding gums; and swelling. There are also a few behavioral clues. You may notice changes in your dog’s eating patterns. He might chew on one side of his mouth, take longer eating, favor soft foods, and avoid harder foods. Your canine buddy may also lose interest in chewing and playing, and may act grumpy, withdrawn, or sad. Call your vet if you notice any of these indicators.

Regular Exams

Dogs can develop a wide variety of issues, such as gum disease, cavities, cracked or broken teeth, abscesses, and overcrowding. Fido should have his teeth examined regularly by a vet, starting at about one year of age.

Water

Make sure Fido always has plenty of fresh, clean water available. This is important for your furry friend’s general health and hydration, but it’s also crucial for his oral health.

Suitable Chew Toys

Chewing is actually good for your canine companion’s teeth. It strengthens his jaw muscles and stimulates the flow of saliva. Make sure that Fido has appropriate chews. (Tip: put some doggy toothpaste on a chew for Fido.)

Doggy Dental Products

Dental-formula kibble, treats, and chews are all beneficial. You can also get Fido oral rinses or dental flakes. Ask your veterinarian for specific advice on these products.
