Holidays With Fluffy

December 1 2021

Happy Holidays! This special time of year can be quite a lot of fun for kitties. There are decorations to investigate, yummy treats to be had, gifts to enjoy, and new boxes to play with. However, Fluffy does have a knack for mischief. You’ll want to take a few steps to keep your cat happy, healthy, and safe over the coming weeks. Here, a local Langford, BC vet offers some advice on spending the holidays with your feline pal.

Decorating

The holidays offer almost endless possibilities for kitty mischief. There are many hazards to be aware of at this time of year. This includes any sharp or shiny objects, such as fragile ornaments, ornament hooks, tinsel, and small ornaments, garlands, ribbons, and lights. Keep your furry buddy in mind as you decorate. Decorate the part of the tree Fluffy can reach sparingly, and put things like candles, holiday plants, and other decorations in spots your frisky pet can’t access.

Stress

Cats are very much creatures of habit, and they can get quite distressed by changes in their everyday routines or environments. Watch for signs that Fluffy is feeling anxious, such as overgrooming, hiding, and behavioral changes.

Guests

Our feline buddies all have their own personalities. Some won’t bat an eye if your home fills up with guests. Others will race for their favorite hiding spots the moment the doorbell rings. No matter which group Fluffy falls into, make sure that she has a quiet, comfy spot to retreat to. You may want to put a kitty bed and some toys in a back bedroom.

Gifts

Fluffy definitely has earned a few gifts with her love and friendship. Toys and treats are pretty much the go-to presents for kitties, but you can also get your feline overlord a new bed, some pet furniture, or a window seat. Your cat will also appreciate having some empty boxes to look adorable in.

Food

Your furry little friend will be paying very close attention to some of those delicious dishes. You can give your kitty some plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken, without the skin, bones, or fat. Canned tuna, chicken, or crabmeat is also fine. Just don’t offer Fluffy anything that’s unsafe, such as chocolate, grapes, alcohol, or avocado. Ask your vet for more information.
