Keeping Kitty Indoors

July 15 2021

Did you know that one of the best things you can do for your feline friend is to keep her indoors? Cats may enjoy exploring the Great Outdoors, but they’re always safer staying in. As soon as Fluffy sets her adorable little paws outside, she’s at risk from traffic, predators, parasites, weather, and other hazards. However, she may take some convincing to stay in. A local Millstream, BC vet offers some advice on this below.

Make The Indoors Fun

Cats really enjoy napping, but Fluffy can’t spend all of her time sleeping. It’s important for your kitty to have entertainment and stimulation. Offer your feline buddy lots of fun toys to bat around, and take time to play with her regularly. Your furry best friend will also appreciate having lots of comfy napping spots, and some kitty furniture to play on and explore.

Bar The Door

One thing that can help quite a bit is making your pet a bit wary of the door. Whenever Fluffy starts sniffing around the door, do something that will annoy her, but won’t hurt her. You can squirt her with water or make a loud noise. Your kitty will probably make a beeline for her favorite hiding spot, where she’ll hopefully start reconsidering the pros and cons of going outdoors.

Stay Firm

It may be tempting to let Fluffy out on a nice day when you’re sticking around, but this will just confuse her. Once you decide to make your furry pal an indoor kitty, stick to the plan. Don’t fall for your cat’s meowpulation tactics!

Consider A Catio

Want to give your little buddy the best of both worlds? Make her a catio! Put pet-safe plants, cat furniture, and fun toys in a bright, sunny spot with a good view. This will offer your feline pal a chance to sniff at plants and peek out at you from behind green leaves, which lets her indulge her inner lioness a bit. The ASPCA has a full list of safe and unsafe plants online here . You can use a patio, sunroom, spare room, or even just a bright corner. If you want to go all-out, you can build Fluffy her own enclosure.
